#427 - Our Support System
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, life ebbs and flows and twists and turns. One day it rains while the next day it is bright sunshine. We may suffer in our high school years and then be blessed in college. Another crisis enters our life in our early adult years followed by a season of good times. A rapid succession of sad events welcomes us to middle-age followed by the aches and pains of aging. It is life. It is normal. It is normal for our friends and family as well. However, their ebbs and flows don't necessarily line up with ours. When I'm down, they may be up. When I'm up, they may be down. Sometimes, we are in sync. We are both are experiencing a sunny or a rainy season at the same time. It is amazing the way You work things out with relationships. In my thirties, Mary comes into our life and she becomes my mentor. In my forties, I help Steve through a health crisis. In my fifties, James comes into my life to carry me through I period of unemployment. Not only do long-term friends and family take turns being in need but You also temporarily bring people into our lives at just the right time. Father, You have put us in community because we need each other. You knew that we cannot stay on the proverbial horse every hour of every day for eighty years. We are going to fall off. We will need to help each other stand up, dust off, and then get back on the horse. We are not little gods. We are mortal human beings, susceptible to emotional, spiritual, and physical injury and exhaustion. We are only as strong as our support system. May I be compassionate and generous to those who suffer when my load is light. May they accept my care. May those whose load is light be compassionate and generous to me when my load is heavy. May I accept their care. May acts of compassion bless both of us. Amen.
