#718 - Refugees Are in My Community
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor

Dear Father, we get so easily caught up in politics, religion, and philosophy. We insist that people need to think like us, look like us, act like us, or talk like us before we will be compassionate to them. In other words, we have conditional love. We will love somebody if they pass our test of standards. Many refugees are fleeing persecution, war, famine, and plague in their homeland. They don't know the future ahead of them. They don't have jobs. They don't have a home. They may only have the clothes on their back. They may be hungry and thirsty. They may be sick and injured. Their families may have broken apart. They may be grieving loved ones who have died. They are people suffering intense adversity and this makes them open to the love of Jesus Christ. It is in adversity that we hear Your voice. It is in adversity that we know that we are not our own gods. It is in adversity that we learn to trust You. It is in adversity that we learn that idols can't save us. Father, a refugee crisis is a mission field. Refugees need their basic needs met while at the same time they are searching for the answers that we have. Help me to have a heart for refugees. Help me to show them compassion. Father, don't let me discriminate against refugees in need because they are not like me or because I fear some among them may be malicious. May I show them the unconditional love of Jesus Christ while You protect us from those who will do us evil. Amen.
