#433 - Someone Is in Excruciating Pain
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, someone I care about is in excruciating pain. Please have mercy on them. Please give them relief. Please give them rest. Father, intense physical pain can shut down our capacity to process spiritual or emotional issues. Everything else takes a backseat when our flesh and bones are screaming in pain. Father, if I have emotional or spiritual pain, I can go for a walk in the woods to clear my mind. I can take time to escape by reading an enjoyable book in the backyard. I can take my kayak down a gentle river, thinking about life and about You while I look up at the puffy clouds in the blue sky. However, if I have intense pain in my head, limbs, or torso, my only thought is to survive the next fifteen seconds. How can I get relief? What position can I find comfort in? Who can come to my rescue? How long will it take before they get here? Where's the nearest hospital? Father, Jesus addressed people's physical pain when He walked this earth. He knew that people in agony will find it difficult to consider issues of sin and rebellion and forgiveness and grace. He healed them of their physical ailments. Father, please bring relief to my loved one this very hour. Once they have enjoyed relief and rest, may You call them to emotional healing and spiritual renewal. Father, the next time I know someone is experiencing intolerable physical pain, help me to be compassionate and understand it is not an appropriate time for a lecture. It is time to simply hug them and not let go. Amen.
