#449 - I'm Petty
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, why can't people turn down the thermostat? Why can't they adjust the blinds on the windows the way I want them? Why do people drive too close to the car in front of them? Why do the neighbors put out their trash on the sidewalk instead of the curb? Why does my daughter-in-law manicure her nails the way she does? Why does someone mispronounce the word water? Why does my employee sniffle all the time? Why would they wear that shirt with those pair of pants? What were they thinking when they bought those shoes? Why did they move the frozen foods to the other aisle of the grocery store? Father, there are a million other ways for me to be petty. I make the proverbial mountains out of molehills. I can take anything trivial and make a crisis out of it. I'm a pro. I can alienate the people You want me to love by making a federal case out of things that just don't matter. No one is more pleased with this than our enemy. He wants me to be nasty and unpleasant to be with. Who will listen to my message about the love of Christ when I'm irritating people by being so petty? Father, I need to let things go. I can't fuss about the small stuff anymore. It doesn't honor you. I do it because I'm so self-important, the center of the universe. I do it because I apparently don't have the stamina to put up with things that aren't just right. Change my heart, Father. Amen.
