#485 - I've Created a Controversy
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, there are few things humans dislike more than to stir up controversy among friends, family, and associates. In a world where protests, riots, and wars are prevalent, there is still a hesitation to ruffle the feathers of those closest to us. The closer something controversial comes to our daily relationships, the less comfortable we are with it. We hate conflict and confrontation. We will do anything to avoid an argument with others, including denial. Situations arise that demand that we take a stand. For example, if the leadership of my church makes a decision that is clearly against Your Word, I am compelled to challenge the decision. If my family of believers is dishonoring Your name by the way we interact with our neighbors, I am compelled to call my family to change our ways. Father, You want us to take a stand for what is right per Your Word. However, the challenge is how do we take that stand. Do we attack? Do we condemn? Do we judge? Do we mock? Do we insult? No. We lovingly speak truth into people's lives. We talk to them one-on-one. We demonstrate the fruits of the Holy Spirit such as love, peace, gentleness, patience, kindness, and self-control. It takes time to change people's minds. The most effective technique to get someone to think differently is to love them through all the struggles they are having in life. Father, forgive me for rashly condemning a group of people for their beliefs. I created conflict. I created disunity. It was not the loving approach You have called me to. Help me to apologize to the group and to build a one-on-one relationship with each person involved. May my sincere acts of repentance and genuine relationship help them to eventually listen to the message You have put on my heart. Amen.
