#492 - I Hate Christmas - Part 1
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor

God, I hate Christmas. I hate all the stupid Christmas movies and specials on TV. I hate all the Christmas carols, holiday parties, and gift giving. I'm tired of manger scenes with shepherds. Happy families in gorgeous homes enjoying a warm fireplace. Children opening presents with delight. A young woman elated as her boyfriend proposes marriage in the falling snow. I hate Christmas. My Christmases have always been miserable. Tradition? Drunkenness. Cocaine. Screaming and yellowing. The police. Hot dogs and beans. Things found in the garage rewrapped as gifts. One year, my relative molested me. I hate Christmas. Christmas is when the rest of the world celebrates their good lives. Christmas for us is the reminder of how miserable our lives are. Father, Your Word tells us in Numbers that the children are punished for the rebellion of the parents for three or four generations. Families are punished by the brokenness and dysfunction that passes to the children. My grandparents were abused by their parents. My parents were abused by my grandparents. My parents have emotionally and physically abused me. This is not the life You wanted for my family. Father, each generation has rebelled from You. Each generation has lived to be their own god. Each generation has doubted Your character. Each generation has worshipped idols. The Holy Spirit cannot transform the hearts of those who reject You. My family didn't pass down the legacy of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. My family passed down hate, bitterness, conflict, rage, cruelty, distrust, aggression, and chaos. Instead of turning to You for refuge, we turned to drugs or alcohol. We turned to crime. We turned to gambling. We turned to sexual promiscuity. All of this led to poverty. Our poverty intensified the dysfunction and the family spiraled into the abyss. So this is Christmas. What have we done? The holiday has become symbolic for the rebellion in my family. It has become symbolic for misery. Father, please deliver my family. Amen.
